INTRODUCTION TO FILM

“The world is dark around us…but everything is as clear as day surrounded by these headlights.”

Cycling. An amazing, rigorous, and sometimes confusing sport – a discipline all its own. Peek inside the sport and become intrigued by a community filled with stories of courage and human strength… along with an occasional outed cheater or the local asshole cyclist. Cyclists all fall in and out of love with the sport many times, but it's the community, the traditions, the grandeur (and the glory!) that haunts us and pulls us back time and time again.

The Piedmont region of North Carolina offers some of the best cycling routes in the United States, and cycling enthusiasts abound in the city of Winston-Salem. Balancing the needs of work, family and friends is a delicate balancing act, so a small group of friends began riding before work back in 2001; this group of riders were the foundation of what would become known as “0530”.

Over the years, the fabric of this group became more of an oasis for recovering pro cyclists than a group of mere enthusiasts, and a lasting dichotomy was formed – the pros brought a level of competitiveness not previously experienced. It was a mish mash of misfits from every corner of the cycling community, and they somehow blended together to make life more interesting for each other, on the bike and off the bike.

Join us for a look at the group, known as 0530, as they face myriad challenges in 2020.

“It was early spring 2019 when Wes hit me with the idea of doing a small doc. I did not take him seriously really. I just kept thinking, so you want to make a doc about a bunch of road pirates. good luck!”

CONCEPTION OF FILM

It all started in a cold basement in February 2020. Wes and Keith were resting between intervals during an insane workout cooked up by coach Jon Hamblen. After a hefty gulp from his sports drink, Wes looked over and asked Keith, “Have you ever thought of making a documentary on Team 0530?” Keith answered, “Hell yes!” And just like many of the best ideas that have ever been dreamed up, the idea for this film began on a bike.

Little did we know what 2020 had in store when we hung Griffin out the back of Wes’s pickup truck with his camera, nor the rich stories this eccentric bunch had tucked in their jersey pockets, ready to share whenever asked. What was uncovered brought to light questions and answers regarding the importance of community regardless of the catalyst. That we all share a common core and humanity that all too often go unnourished.
